HISTORY
Background
Montalbano Industria Agroalimentare SpA (MIA) is a modern industry located in Tuscany that operates in Italy and in the most important markets. MIA conceived the first idea to develop a device to monitor the quality of perishables.
From the idea to the proof of concept
The first idea of a device to monitor the quality of perishable products was conceived and developed in MIA’s quality control laboratory.

The idea sprung from a very simple consideration: perishable products are subject to modifications induced by environmental factors such as heat, pressure, humidity, light etc. The quality of such products is gradually lost along the logistic chain and is not delivered to the end-user.
Based on the above consideration, MIA conceived the idea of a device which could monitor the exposure of perishable products and materials to modifying environmental factors throughout their entire logistic cycle.
An ad-hoc technology division was created in 2002 by MIA to perform R&D activities on the above idea. This project lead to an electronic prototype, based on discrete components, which has represented the product proof of concept.
Based on that prototype and on the original idea, an industrial project was carried out to develop a family of innovative RF-ID based multi-sensor solutions.
The first phase of the project ended in September 2005 with the production of the first samples of a RF-ID smart label, embedding a single chip solution for monitoring the quality of perishable products and materials.
in brief...The new company
Montalbano Technology S.p.A. (MT) was incorporated in October 2005. MT is part of a group of companies that are also active in the food industry. The company group leader, Montalbano Industria Agroalimentare SpA (MIA), conceived the idea of this device and achieved the goal of a positive and efficient technical solution. MT was found in order to run the industrial and commercial phases of the project and also to further develop this technology.

The company group leader, Montalbano Industria Agroalimentare SpA (MIA), conceived the idea of this device and achieved the goal of a positive and efficient technical solution. MT was found in order to run the industrial and commercial phases of the project and also to further develop this technology.
The company is privately owned by MT’s President, Giuseppe Oriana (82,04% of the share capital, both directly and through a holding company), by Intesa Sanpaolo Bank (13,63%) and by Marco Bianchini (4,3% of the share capital), a chief researcher at the Italian Institute of Research (CNR).
The device and the relevant Intellectual Property (IP) owned by MIA – were licensed to MT pursuant to a five-year contract. MIA has also granted MT the option to buy the product and all the relevant IP licensed to MT.
